The more things change,
Or the worse we feel things become,
The more we isolate ourselves,
Seeking an illusion of safety and security,
Losing ourselves,
Within familiar and certain walls,
Cut off from the wider reality around us.

After a certain point,
It no longer matters who started it,
And the only thing that does matter,
Is who will stop.

We tear and hurt each other,
And so ourselves,
Over petty differences,
Phantoms without substance.
We don’t learn,
We never learn.

We ignore pain and suffering not our own,
When it suits our purposes.
Yet it surprises us when pain and frustration,
Turns to anger that strikes us to sorrow and fear.
And in that fear we lash out in return,
Pain breeding pain without pause or end.

Small voices say, “Stop, enough!”
Louder voices call for vengeance.
Repaying death with death;
Murderers and martyrs to futility.
Like fighting terror with fear,
A joke.

So much potential,
So much beauty and generosity,
And yet we fall back to hate and fear so easily.
We see the picture and we see nothing.
Maybe we should open our eyes,
If we can anymore.

We say never again,
Again, again and again.
Yet time and again,
We forget.
Another joke?
But who’s laughing?

Hatred.
Sometimes just another word for fear,
But more often,
A direct result of it.

If fear is not real,
The same can be said of hope.
Both are illusions.
Hope can give you the strength to endure,
Through pain and hardship,
But hope too long unrealised,
Can easily twist into bitterness and resentment.
The same is true where the final reality,
Does not compare with the dream.
So, as with fear,
Carefully apply reason to hope.

We are all afraid,
Of illness, of war,
Of failure, of darkness,
Of loss, of change,
Of death, of life,
Of ourselves, of others,
Of fear.

It is difficult,
Uncomfortable and painful,
To admit to fear,
To see it for what it is,
And not as anger, distrust, disgust,
Or as the perception of deviance.

We cannot control what others believe and feel,
Or the universe around us,
We can only strive to accept,
With open minds and hearts,
Learning to delight in diversity,
In reality as it is,
Not necessarily as we would wish it to be.

Until we see through our beliefs and assumptions,
Seeing truly,
With reason and not with fear,
Nothing will change.
